Garnish Island, also known as Ilnacullin, is located in Glengarriff Harbour, West Cork, Ireland. The island is renowned for its beautifully landscaped gardens and rich history. In the early 20th century, Garnish Island was transformed by Annan Bryce, a Belfast MP, and his wife, Violet. They collaborated with the distinguished horticulturist Harold Peto to create the island’s gardens. Peto’s design incorporated a mix of formal and informal gardens, featuring exotic plants that thrive in the island’s mild, subtropical climate. The Bryce family planted a diverse array of rare and exotic plants, which, coupled with the island’s unique microclimate, allowed the gardens to flourish. Structures such as the Italianate garden, Grecian temple, and Martello tower add to the island’s charm and historical significance. In 1953, the island was bequeathed to the Irish state and is now managed by the Office of Public Works. Garnish Island continues to be a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its stunning gardens, historic buildings, and breathtaking views of Bantry Bay.
