Established in 1845, UCC was one of the three Queen's Colleges founded in Ireland, alongside those in Belfast and Galway. The Main Quadrangle, often referred to simply as "The Quad," was designed by the renowned architect Sir Thomas Deane in the Gothic Revival style, characterised by its pointed arches, lancet windows, and intricate stone carvings. Construction began in the mid-19th century and continued over several decades, with the earliest buildings being completed in the 1850s. The cloistered walkways and lush gardens add to its charm, making it a popular spot for both students and visitors. Today, The Main Quadrangle stands as a symbol of UCC's historical significance and its commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while continuing to serve as a vibrant center of learning and research.
