Blarney Castle (Irish: Caisleán na Blarnan) is a medieval stronghold in Blarney, 8 kilometres north-west of Cork City. Though earlier fortifications were built on the same spot, the castle that stands today was built from 1446 by the MacCarthy of Muskerry dynasty, a branch of the Kings of Desmond. The castle is set in historic gardens that provide an attractive place to enjoy the sunshine, and Blarney Town itself provides a pretty and busy place to visit. For over 200 years visitors to the castle have climbed the many steps to the top of the castle in order to take in the view and kiss the Blarney Stone due to its legend for giving the gift of eloquence.
